Upgrade to the latest version

New ESET Mail Security versions are issued to provide improvements or fix issues that program module automatic updates cannot resolve.

Upgrade methods include:

Uninstall/Install

This method consists of removing the existing ESET Mail Security version before installing the new one. Download the latest version of ESET Mail Security. Export settings from your existing ESET Mail Security if you want to preserve your configuration. Uninstall ESET Mail Security and restart the server. Perform a fresh installation with the .msi installer you downloaded. Import settings to load your configuration. We recommend this procedure if you have a single server running ESET Mail Security.

In-place

This is an upgrade method in which you install the new ESET Mail Security version over the existing one.

Important

It is necessary that you have no pending Windows Updates on your server, as well as no pending restart due to Windows Updates or for any other reason. If you try performing an in-place upgrade with pending Windows Updates or a restart, the existing ESET Mail Security version may not uninstall correctly. You will also experience problems if you manually remove the old ESET Mail Security version afterward.

Note

If you upgrade to ESET Mail Security version 12.1, the .msi installer uses a new rebootless feature that performs the upgrade without a system restart. Rebootless applies when upgrading from ESET Mail Security version 10.0 and later. When upgrading from version 8.0 or 9.0, rebootless works only on systems with Device control disabled. A server restart is required for upgrades from version 8.0 or 9.0 with Device control active.

Changes in the future may result in incompatibility for certain upgrade scenarios, where a system restart will be required.

Rebootless feature is also supported when you manage ESET Mail Security via ESET PROTECT. You can perform a rebootless upgrade by leaving the Automatically restart device option deselected when running the ESET PROTECT software install task.

The ESET Mail Security Installation Wizard will display a dialog notifying you that a system restart is necessary to complete the upgrade, if that is the case. You can choose to Continue with the installation/upgrade, agreeing to the system restart, or press Cancel to abort the process.

Remote

This method is used in large network environments managed by ESET PROTECT, and is a clean upgrade method carried out remotely. It is useful if you have multiple servers running ESET Mail Security.

ESET Cluster wizard

You can also use the ESET Cluster wizard to upgrade in-place. We recommend this method for two or more servers with ESET Mail Security. When the upgrade is complete, you can continue using ESET Cluster and its features.

Antispam protection settings:

All settings that are identical in previous versions, any new settings will use defaults.

Whitelist and blacklist entries.

Note

When you upgrade your ESET Mail Security, we recommend you go through all the settings to ensure it is configured correctly according to your needs.
