Host Intrusion Prevention Systems protect your system from malware and unwanted activity likely to interfere with the running of your computer.

A HIPS generally works on a different principle to an antivirus scanner. It monitors entry points into the system (and specific system activities, such as process creation, driver loading, etc.) and blocks suspected intrusion attempts (or prompts the user to allow or reject a suspicious activity).
