Device control

ESET Security Ultimate provides automatic device (CD/DVD/USB/etc.) control. You can block or adjust extended filters/permissions and define a user's ability to access and work with a given device. This is useful if the device administrator wants to prevent using devices containing unsolicited content.

Configure Device control

To configure Device control, press the F5 key to open Advanced setup, then navigate to Protections > Device control.

Click the Enable Device control toggle to enable this feature in ESET Security Ultimate. You must restart your device for this change to take effect. After enabling Device control, you can define the Rules in the Rules editor window.

example

Device control is not limited to allowing or blocking all removable media. You can create rules for specific devices and users. For detailed instructions on creating device-specific exceptions, see Rules editor.

You can allow access to a particular USB storage device while blocking all other removable storage devices. Device control rules can be based on device attributes such as device type, vendor, model, or serial number (depending on the device type and available information).

Supported external devices:

•Disk Storage (HDD, USB removable disk)

•CD/DVD

•USB Printer

•FireWire Storage

•Bluetooth Device

•Smart card reader

•Imaging Device

•Modem

•LPT/COM port

•Portable Device (battery-powered devices such as media players, smartphones, plug-and-play devices, etc.)

•All device types

Note

You can create different groups of devices where different rules will be applied. You can also create only one group of devices for which the rule with action Allow or Write Block will be applied. This ensures blocking unrecognized devices by Device control when connected to your device.

If a device blocked by an existing rule is inserted, a notification window will be displayed and access to the device will not be granted.
