Database

ESET Security Management Center uses a database to store client data. The following sections detail the installation, backup, upgrade and migration of the ESMC Server (ERA Server or ERA 6.x Proxy Service, if you are running the 6.x version) database:

Review database compatibility and system requirements for ESMC Server.

If you do not have a database configured for use with ESMC Server, Microsoft SQL Server Express is included with the installer.

If you have Microsoft SQL Server installed in your system, review the requirements below to make sure your version of Microsoft SQL Server is supported by ESET Security Management Center. If your version of Microsoft SQL Server is not supported, upgrade to a compatible version of SQL Server.

The ERA Proxy component from the version 6 is substituted by third-party proxy service due to change of Agent replication protocol. Do not migrate the Proxy database between versions 6.x and 7.

Are you upgrading an environment with ERA Proxy?

A prerequisite for the installation is to have Microsoft SQL Server installed and configured. The following requirements must be met:

Install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 or later, alternatively you can install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express or later. Choose Mixed mode authentication during installation.

If you have Microsoft SQL Server already installed, set authentication to Mixed mode (SQL Server authentication and Windows authentication). To do so, follow the instructions in this Knowledgebase article.

If you want to use Windows Authentification to log in to Microsoft SQL Server, follow the steps in this Knowledgebase article.

Allow TCP/IP connections to the SQL Server. To do so, follow the steps in this Knowledgebase article from part II. Allow TCP/IP connections to the SQL database.

To configure, manage and administer Microsoft SQL Server (databases and users), download SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).

We recommend that you do not install SQL Server on a Domain Controller (for example, if you are using Windows SBS / Essentials). We recommend that you install ESET Security Management Center on a different server or do not select the SQL Server Express component during installation (this requires you to use your existing SQL or MySQL Server to run the ESMC database).
