Adding web control rules

The Web control rules window enables you to create or modify an existing web control filtering rule manually. There are two types of rules, URL rules and Category-based rules. Click Add or Edit to manage a rule.

URL rules

Fill in the General fields as described below, and the URL field. The special symbols * (asterisk) and ? (question mark) cannot be used in the URL address list. When creating a URL group that contains a website with multiple top-level domains (TLDs), each TLD must be added separately. If you add a domain to the group, all content located on this domain and all subdomains (for example, sub.examplepage.com) will be blocked or allowed based on your choice of URL-based action.

Name

Type a name of the rule into the Name field for better identification.

Description

Shortly describe the rule.

Enabled

Click the Enabled switch to disable or enable the rule. This can be useful if you do not want to delete the rule permanently.

Access rights

Allow—Access to the URL address/category is allowed.

Block—Blocks access to the URL address/category. You can click Go Back to return to the previous website.

Warn—Blocks access to the URL address/category. You can click Go Back to return to the previous website or click Continue to access the website. If you click Continue, the blocking page will not be displayed the next time you visit the website.

Warn always—Blocks access to the URL address/category. You can click Go Back to return to the previous website or click Continue to access the website. The blocking page will be displayed each time you visit the website.

Log rule

Enable or disable logging of the rule.

Logging severity

None—No logs will be created.

Trace —Logs all execution of code.

Debug—Logs information that might be needed to debug or troubleshoot the program.

Information—Records informative messages, including successful update messages, plus all records above.

Warning—Records critical errors and warning messages.

Error—Records errors that can affect the functionality of the program.

Fatal—Records errors that prevent the program from running.

User list

Click Edit to modify user lists.

Add—Opens the User Security Identifiers dialog window to select desired users. When no user is selected, the rule is applied to all users.

Edit—Modify an existing user.

Remove—Removes the selected user from the filter.

Category-based rules

The rule will be applied based on a website category.

Fill in the General fields as described above, and in the Category section, select the website category or a group of categories to allow, block or warn the user when one of the categories is detected.
